Oral Cancer Awareness Month: Have You Been Screened?

This month, Dr. Pannu and the team at Pannu Dental Care in San Jose, CA, want to make sure you know the facts about oral cancer. Many people have never thought about oral cancer. Only smokers need to worry about it, right? Wrong! Here are the facts.

  • Oral cancer will steal 8000 American lives this year
  • One person, every hour, every day dies from oral cancer
  • Over 35,000 people will be newly diagnosed with oral cancer this year
  • Only half of people diagnosed with oral cancer will live five years or more
  • Early detection and treatment of oral cancer increases the potential for survival to 80%

An oral cancer screening takes all of two minutes at your dental checkup. Dr. Pannu or one of his associates will inspect the soft tissues of your mouth: your cheeks, tongue, gums, soft and hard palate. If a suspicious white or red spot exists, you’ll be asked whether you’ve noticed the spot before and how long you’ve had it. If you’re unsure, we’ll ask you to evaluate the spot regularly for about two weeks. If the lesion does not heal, the dentist will perform a brush biopsy – a simple, painless, and quick test. Based on the lab results, we will advise you of the next steps.

Oral cancer does strike men more than women, and those who smoke, drink alcohol, or have HPV-16 are at higher risk. However, anyone can develop oral cancer. Screening is essential, and it could save your life.
