Don’t Fear the Dentist

A healthy smile is important, not just for self-confidence and a better appearance, but for good overall health. Unfortunately, few things cause more fear in people than a visit to the dentist. In fact, according to a recent survey by the British Dental Health Foundation, snakes and spiders cause less anxiety than a visit to the dentist. It’s true! Fear of heights came in first, followed closely by dental visits, then creepy crawlies.

This news is disconcerting because dental fear could lead to fewer dentist visits and poor oral health. Proper dental health is easy to maintain with daily brushing and flossing, but routine checkups and cleanings are just as important. If you attempt to maintain a healthy mouth with one and not the other, it’s like fighting with one hand tied behind your back.

Luckily, there are many things you can do to alleviate your dental phobia. In fact, the American Dental Association offers a list of helpful suggestions to ease anxiety during your next dental office visit.

  • While you’re in the chair, visualize yourself in a happy, relaxing place, such as the beach
  • Bring along a personal radio, MP3 player or CD player to drown out sound so you can relax
  • Schedule your dentist appointment for a time when you won’t feel pressured or rushed
  • Finally, explain to your dentist that you’re anxious about going to the dentist, and express your specific concerns

Communication is very important, and there are many options available to calm your fears. First, we offer nitrous oxide to help calm you during your visit. Also, as a sedation dentist, Dr. Pannu can administer a small pill to relax you for up to six hours. And, there are no needles with these options!
