Enjoy the Weather — But Protect Yourself!

As spring and summer come upon us, the weather is ripe for outdoor activities. Going for a bike ride, picking up a soccer game, or joining a baseball team are great ways to stay in shape and enjoy the great outdoors. Before you start to play outside, though, I want you to know, between 11 and 40% of sports injuries involve the face. Now I don’t want to scare you away from the activities that will keep you active, but I do want to educate you on how to avoid dental, facial, and brain injuries while you play.

Wearing proper protective gear is very important. If appropriate for your sport, wear body pads and a helmet. And whether you’re playing rugby or roller blading, be sure to wear a mouthguard. An athletic mouthguard will protect your teeth and gums, but it may also prevent concussion. In fact, concussion prevention is a hot topic in Washingon, DC. H.R.469 – Protecting Student Athletes from Concussions Act of 2011 was introduced in January of this year. It would require schools to implement a standardized plan for concussion education, treatment, management, and support for students who suffer a concussion.

Facial, dental, and brain injuries are a serious problem, with lifelong influence. So enjoy your time outdoors, playing in the wonderful weather – but please, wear your mouthguard!

You can purchase a boil-and-bite mouthguard at most pharmacies. If you’d like a more comfortable option that offers increased protection, ask your dentist for a custom-made athletic mouthguard at your next visit. Schedule a visit with one of the kind and qualified dentists at Pannu Dental Care today.
