A stitch in time saves nine

“Can’t you save my teeth?”, an ailing grandmother’s beseeching request when she started losing her precious pearly whites motivated Dr. Mohamed Khaled to traverse years of academic education and training to specialize in periodontics. “It is a misnomer that with age it is natural to lose teeth. It is the bacteria that start weakening the bone and subsequently lead to loss of teeth. The process can be easily reversed by keeping your teeth in good shape with regular professional cleaning and monitoring by a dentist”, says Dr. Khaled. “That’s why here in the US we catch diseases early and it is not uncommon for people in eighties and nineties to retain their original teeth. People go for regular check-ups and surely a stitch in time saves nine,” he opines.

The dictionary definition of periodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with diseases of the supporting and investing structures of the teeth including the gums, cementum, periodontal ligaments, and alveolar bone. Simply put, a periodontist deals with gums and foundations around the tooth. He helps strengthen tooth foundation, helps eradicate gum disease and boosts longevity of teeth along with playing a vital role in overall health of a person. It is a well-known fact that bacteria from mouth can go to any part of body as surrounding structures of a tooth connect it with the entire body. These unhealthy bacteria , if not checked in time, can contribute to diseases of heart, lung and pain in joints. A periodontist’s intervention can not only help increase the life of teeth but can also prevent certain diseases in other vital parts of the human body.
